  1. Motives for war
    1. wanted new source of raw material & new trade
    2. M(military), A (Alliances), I (imperialism), N (Nationalism)
  2. Out break of war
    1. the assassination of Archduke Francis Ferdinand, heir to Austrian throne
      1. killed by Bosnians, worked for Black Hand
        1. Black Hand: Serbian terrorist organization
      2. lead to view tat i was an opportunity to conquer Serbia
  3. War in the West
    1. Schlieffen Plan
      1. General Alfred Von Schlienffen called for a rapid invasion of western France by way of natural Belgium
        1. gambled France could be knocked out of the war before Russia had a chance o mobilize
      2. Germany could not mobilize its troops against Russia
      3. Plan failed, thus created trench warfare
        1. led for four years, 600 miles from English Channel to the Swiss border
        2. the east had more mobilization
  4. Home Front
    1. realized that their wasn't going to be over soon, they got all human and industrial resources to wage total war
    2. government had tight censorship & used propaganda
    3. woman placed in factories( fist time ever)
      1. Pankhurst; held riots and radical trikes for women’s rights
  5. Bolshevik Revolution
    1. Lenin realized the survival of the Bolsheviks depended on ending the war with Germany
    2. Bolsheviks agreed to Lenin’s terms--> Treaty of Brest-Litovsk
      1. Russia lost a quarter of its territory and a third of its population

  1. Fourteen Points
    1. Woodrow Wilson’s Speech
    2. points include: open diplomacy, freedom of the seas, & reduction o national armaments
  2. Paris Peace Conference
    1. 30 countries were represented, Germany and Austria were not allowed to attend
      1. secret agreements and treaties were made here
  3. Treaty of Versailles
    1. Germany lost 13 percent of lad
    2. Germany’s army was limited to 100,00 men and was forbidden to have artillery aircraft or submarines
    3. allies had the right to occupy the Rhine land
    4. Germany was blamed guilty of starting the war
