Luther disagreed with popes claims against reform (Church is superior to state, Pope is the only one to interpret scripture, pope is only one to call council)
believed Clergy should be able to marry
Disliked most Catholic sacraments

Excommunicated January 1521
Called before the diet of Worms by Charles V expected to renounce heretical documents but chose not to and was made an outlaw
1522 Organized reform church in Wittenberg
Luther's Ideas spread in Europe in the 1520s- 60s
many German states began accepting Luther's doctrines
Nurmebeg is the first city to convert to Lutheranism in 1525
Philip Melanchthon became a fervent supporter
Thomas Muntzer, ex follower of Luther, incites peasant revolt in Southwest Germany in 1525 which spread north
