Napoleon's Policies
  • peace w. oldest and implacable enemy of Revolution, Catholic Church, to stablize regime
  • Concordat - recongize Catholicism as religion of majority of French people
  • Civil Code/ Code Napoleon
    • equality of all citizens before the law
    • right of individuals to choose professions
    • religious toleration
    • abolition of serfdom and feudalism
    • women still did not have rights
  • developed powerful, centralized administrative machine
  • No tax exemptions due to birth, status, special arrangement
  • Promotion based only on demonstrated abilities
  • new aristocracy based on merit in state service
The Grand Empire
  • conquest to control all of Europe
  • defeated continental members of coalition
  • creation of new European order
  • inner core of Grand Empire: France
  • dependent states: Spain, Holland, Italy, Swiss Republic, Grand Duchy of Warsaw, German states
  • tried to destroy old order... Nobility and clergy lost special privileges
  • establihsed secret police force to root out opponents
  • Fight against Britain
  • Continental system - to prevent British goods from reaching European continent to weaken Britain economically (failed)

2 Factors in Defeat of Napoleon
  • 1) Great Britain's seapower, Napoleon couldn't overcome British navy
  • 2) nationalism (all the countries Napoleon conquered)
  • Napoleon's invasion of Russia... lost
  • exiled to island of Elba
  • Bourbon monarchy resotred in France w. Louis XVIII
  • Napoleon escaped back to France... raised another army to attack enemies
  • at Waterloo - Napoleon met combined British and Prussian army under duke of Wellington... suffered bloody defeat
  • Napoleon exiled once more to Saint Helena
