Agricultural Revolution

  • Jethro Tull creates a machine that plants seeds in neat rows which was far more effective than simply scattering the seed
  • Viscount Townshend introduces the idea of enriching the soils with nutrients from plants like clover and turnips
  • Creation of chemical fertilizers also stimulated the growth of agriculture
  • Four factors also contributed to the increase in agriculture: more land under cultivation, increased yield per acre, healthier and abundant livestock, and an improvement in climate
  • New plants, such as different kinds of peas and beans, as well as potatoes, were introduced
  • The Enclosure Movement: the closing off of farms, also helped to increase crop production
