  • Marco Polo:
    • traveled with Niccolo and Maffeo Polo to Kublai Khan's Mongol empire, and China
    • The Travels - record of his travels and a description of Asia.
  • Henry the Navigator:
    • Portuguese Prince, exploration of Western coast of Africa, successfully sailed through the "Sea of Darkness" past the Cape of Bajador, found gold in Africa
  • Vasco da Gama:
    • Portuguese Navigator, opened sea route to India to find new spices(ginger, cinnamon), increased profits dramatically
  • Ferdinand Magellan:
    • Portuguese, first to circumnavigate the world using 5 ships.
  • Hernan Cortes:
    • arrive and conquered Tenochtitlan, the capital of the Aztec capital
    • thought to be the God by the Aztecs and was treated well
    • took the king Montezuma II hostage and asked for gold and jewels
    • destroyed Aztec empire and rebuilt on their ruins
    • continued to explore Mexico
  • Francisco Pizarro:
    • Spanish, explored Panama, conquered Incan Empire.
  • Christopher Columbus:
    • funded by Spain, tried to prove you could sail West to Asia from Europe, discovered the Americas
  • Bartholomew Dias:
    • rounded the Cape of Good Hope
  • Alfonso de Albuquerque:
    • set up favilities in Goa(headquarters for portuguese operations), raids against Arab ships, conquered Malacca
  • Vasco Nunez de Balboa:
    • reached Pacific Ocean on an expedition across Isthmus of Panama
